Weekly Photo Challenge: Winter

Uschi lying in the snow

I already completed the daily posting for this year and I shared this photo earlier this year, but I couldn’t resist participating in the very last photo challenge. I’m glad that other than the fluke storm back in October we haven’t yet been dumped upon this winter, but we have had some incredibly strange weather, well, for most of the year. Uschi will be happy when and if that does change — and she’ll be the only one under this roof who will. But I must admit, it’s hard to be cranky about cold and snow with a shepherd bouncing around in the backyard having the time of her life.

As to the photo itself, I’m particularly fond of it for a number of reasons: Uschi’s actually looking into the camera (and not everywhere but as per her usual demeanor) and it’s one of the rare captures where you can see the dynamic colors of her coat.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Celebration

Dolly happily lounging on a bed

The holiday season is full of celebration, but I decided to use this particular photo for the challenge even though it is quite old because of its simplicity. The first story that Dolly’s puppy raiser, Linda, told me was about Dolly’s last night at home. For the first time Dolly had full run of the house and was free to do whatever she wanted . . . so she made a beeline straight for Linda’s bed and camped out there. Rather telling considering she wasn’t allowed on any of the furniture (though, I have photographic proof of her breaking that rule at least once before). It might seem an insignificant thing, but small as it was it certainly proved that Dolly thoroughly enjoyed herself before heading off for formal guide dog training.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Waiting

Yara looking out across the lake at Washington Park

Yara’s puppy raisers dubbed her their “little supervisor” because she could almost always be found sitting in a good vantage point watching whatever was going on. And it’s still one of her defining traits even in retirement. I have to wonder if she’s actually waiting for something or really just enjoys observing the goings on around her. Either way, it certainly seems peaceful.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Family

Me and Uschi with my dad and Yara

I only just got my hands on this photo from May, so I guess it’s rather fitting in a way that I’m over a week late in participating in this particular challenge. Especially since I wasn’t around because I was spending time with my family (specifically my father, pictured above).

Weekly Photo Challenge: Hidden

Uschi on the sofa, hiding her face from the camera

I absolutely love this photo. It was the first photo I took of Uschi with my new camera and I think she much preferred the time where I wasn’t constantly trying to get a picture of her. I wouldn’t say she was specifically hiding from the camera so much as willfully avoiding looking in the direction I wanted her to. But I wouldn’t put it past her shrewd shepherd mind. I don’t think she’ll ever be as cooperative as Yara when it comes to being photographed, but she’s still better than Dolly who was impossible to get a candid of because any time she noticed the camera she’d pose for it! And, well, I can’t deny that she’s a lot of fun.
