Facebook Changes

I touched on this in my last post, but since a good portion of visitors are probably reading this through syndicated feeds I wanted to post again since the edit about the broken link might be missed. Each feed has its own schedule for when it updates from my website so sometimes there is quite a lag when an edit is made to when it’s viewable elsewhere.

Anyway, Facebook once again made some wacko change. This one alters how the news feed on the main page grabs updates. Instead of loading all your friends, like it used to, it now loads updates from the friends you’ve interacted with recently. So if you haven’t commented on someone’s profile in awhile or vice versa you probably aren’t seeing that person’s updates. This also includes pages.

Fixing this is quite simple, though, just go to your main page and way at the bottom is a link called “Edit Options.” Since the page loads updates via AJAX you might have to wait for it to load a ton of extra posts before you get to the actual bottom and see the link. In that pop-up at the very top is a dropdown option for “Show posts from” which should be set to “All of your friends and pages.”

Easy enough, no?

Well, here’s the thing, I was alerted to this via a friend who linked a note referencing this change. After reading the note and changing my own options, I then linked the same note for my friends to see. I also started seeing other friends had linked the same note, but until I had changed the option their posts were hidden from me. A few hours later another friend sent me a message inquiring where the missing link went because they wanted to fix their option. I went to check my page and it was indeed gone; it had also vanished from all of my friends’ pages that had linked to it. Moreover, the actual note is “unavailable.”

Now it’s possible the author could have deleted the original note, though, I fail to see why she would do that when she was obviously trying to alert people to the new change. But I know for a fact I didn’t delete my own link to it and I’m sure my friends didn’t either, which means that Facebook is the culprit behind the vanishing links. And that just infuriates me. I’ve been increasingly loosing patience with their changing features and not giving notice to the users about the change or how it affects things. But actively deleting content from my personal page is going a bit far. While my link to the note might be viewed as slanderous — I did call Facebook stupid after all — the note itself wasn’t remotely negative. It was merely stating the fact that a change was made, since Facebook couldn’t do that themselves, and gave directions on how to fix your options. It also provided some methods of spreading the news to your friends, such as messaging them or tweeting about the change.

I don’t feel especially violated that they deleted a single link of mine, but the whole thing smells rotten to me and only serves to justify why I’ve never been much of a Facebook fan.

Card and Contract

Fidelco ID card: me and Uschi (whose tongue is hanging out) sitting by her bed in my living room

Arriving in today’s mail, just one day shy of three weeks post-training, was our contract and identification card from Fidelco. Things aren’t official until the six-month mark, though, but it’s nice to have the paperwork in my hand that says Uschi is mine. Unfortunately, I think I dislike this photo even more than my last one. But it is our very first photo together. And, of course, there’s always a slew of professionals to take pretty pictures. In fact, as you might have guessed, my friend Jean took a few last weekend. I’m still waiting on the full images, which is why I haven’t yet shared them all, but they should be here in the next day or three, so I promise you don’t have to wait long.

On a totally different topic, for those of you on Facebook you really need to read this note. Apparently, once again FB has decided to change things without any notification to its user base, so if you don’t have the option set to see everyone’s posts, you can’t see updates from all of your friends. Way to fail, Facebook. *sighs* [EDIT: It seems the note has been removed -- as well as any FB links to the note. Nonetheless, to fix this option and/or check your settings: go to the main Facebook page, scroll to the very bottom and click "Edit Options." There at the top is an option to "Show posts from" which should be set to "All of your friends and pages."]

March 27, 2010

Apparently my life has been pretty dull of late. Except I’ve certainly been busy. Just not in any capacity that feels interesting enough to blog upon. I think this is one of the pros and cons of Twitter. I’ve never been much for blogging every single day — and when I’ve forced myself to do it in the past I usually end up with really random (read: boring) posts. But sometimes there’s just a quick thought or some fleetingly interesting snippet I want to share and for that Twitter’s pretty handy. Unfortunately, that also leaves me with the dilemma of not repeating myself between this blog and Twitter . . . not to mention Facebook!

Anyway, I’m biding my time until May when Yara and I head off to CT. I’m especially looking forward to this vacation since I didn’t end up getting to go to Lunacon as previously planned. And, I recently found out, for the third year in a row I won’t be able to go to Dragon*Con either. On, the brighter side of things, I’m thinking of going to Albacon in October and in about two weeks there is the Empire State Book Festival! Other than that, the only big thing happening is Yara’s yearly this Thursday, my father asking me to read a book for him for school which he then subsequently finished on his own before my order was delivered and the fact that my mother randomly called me this morning. Oh, and I renewed my lease even though I have almost zero desire to stay here, but I haven’t found anything much better and with only a month left I didn’t want to chance it.

So, as I was saying, there really isn’t all that much to babble about here at the moment. I leave you with a cute video of Yara at work from the other day:
